Gastown Steam Clock // Vancouver, Canada
Gastown Steam Clock // Vancouver, Canada
On the corner of Cambie and Water Streets in one of Vancouver’s most stylish neighborhood Gastown, there’s a beautiful iron steam clock - yes, a clock (originally*) powered by a steam engine. Every quarter hour locals and passerbys can hear the clock chime Westminster Quarters and produce a puff of steam from its top every top of the hour. It was designed to cover a steam grate from the city’s central heating.
Gastown started as a shipping trade and commerce center and has grown into a thriving fashion, gallery, and culinary district with distinct historic architecture and history. A definite must-visit when exploring Canada’s third largest city.
*The clock was converted to an electric motor because of the inability for the clock to accurately keep time. :)
